Practical Spirituality

Like the Oil is inside the Seed,

Just as the Fire is Inside the Flint Stone,

Your God Resides is in You, Wake up if you Can.

– Kabir

Pathways to Self

There are as many pathways to the Self as there are people. Spirituality is not about escaping the world or living frugally. It is about learning to live in it—with awareness, alignment, and integrity.

Many seekers ask, “How do I grow spiritually?” They turn to meditation, chanting, pilgrimages, sewa (service) or a guru. But these are tools, not destinations. The real journey begins with yourself—your thoughts, choices, wounds, virtues, and how you show up each day.

At Inner Journeys, we believe in Practical Spirituality —a grounded, embodied, and emotionally integrated approach to spiritual evolution. It blends ancient yogic wisdom with deep therapeutic healing to help you become who your soul came here to be. We are here to guide you every step of the way! Read more

Yamas & Niyamas: The Forgotten Foundation

Sage Patanjali, the father of classical yoga, laid out the Yamas and Niyamas as the first step toward any spiritual progress that is योगश्चित्तवृतिनिरोधः (Yog Sutra, 1.2)

These are not external rules. They are internal refinements—the development of character, discipline, and inner alignment.

The Five Yamas (Ethical Restraints, यम):

1. Ahimsa (अहिंसा) – Non-violence: Cultivating compassion and kindness

2. Satya (सत्य) – Truthfulness: Living with integrity and honesty

3. Asteya (अस्तेय) – Non-stealing: Respecting others’ energy and boundaries

4. Brahmacharya (ब्रह्मचर्य)– Moderation: Mindful use of energy and desire

5. Aparigraha (अपरिग्रह) – Non-possessiveness: Letting go of greed and attachment

The Five Niyamas (Inner Observances, नियम):

1. Shauch (शौच)– Purity: Cleaning body, mind, emotions, and space

2. Santosha (संतोष) – Contentment: Gratitude and peace in the present

3. Tapas (तपस)– Discipline: Willingness to grow through discomfort

4. Swadhyaya (स्वाध्याय)– Self-study: Introspecting and reading sacred texts

5. Ishwar Pranidhan (ईश्वरप्रणिधान) – Surrender: Trusting the Divine over control

“These are not commandments to obey. They are virtues to embody—moment by moment, until your life becomes your practice.”

Without these, spirituality remains superficial. But to live them sincerely, one must first cultivate emotional and mental resilience.

We often look for shortcuts or a guru to guide us on this journey. However, Gurus who offer shortcuts often lead us astray, taking us to the wrong paths or false teachers, which can waste our entire life. To avoid this, it’s essential to bring simplicity into our lives. The first step toward simplicity is adhering to the Yamas and Niyamas—principles of self-restraint, morality, ethics and discipline. This discipline is crucial to bring meaningful changes into our lives and prepare us for further spiritual growth.

The ultimate step of the Yamas and Niyamas is surrendering all our actions to the divine (Ishwarpranidhan, ईश्वरप्रणिधान). This is also known as Karma Sannyas, as described in the Bhagavad Gita. Read more

Spirituality does not mean proving your divinity; we are all inherently divine—that’s why we are born human. Our purpose is to understand ourselves, reflect on our flaws, and work on improving them. The essence of spiritual growth lies in transforming our nature, and enhancing virtues like self-restraint, truthfulness, and non-violence.

Spirituality doesn’t begin with meditation, rather it begins when the meditation ends. It begins when we start applying wisdom, our spirit in our life choices. In our Karma. Some seekers believe that everything can be achieved through meditation and austerities. While true, it’s also important to remember that even demons like Ravana achieved great powers through severe penance. However, because they didn’t transform their inner nature, their achievements were ultimately destroyed. The greatest folly is failing to bring morality into one’s life.

Friends, the first step is to cultivate morality in your thoughts and actions. Self-awareness is the key to bringing this change. For this, Meditation is an excellent tool, as is hypnotherapy, which we include in our workshops and retreats. Hypnotherapy helps individuals uncover their deep-seated flaws, understand them, and find ways to overcome them. (Read more about Hypnotherapy)

Often, people embarking on a spiritual path adopt a facade of peace and emotional maturity without making genuine inner changes. This creates an illusion of spirituality, but deep down, true happiness remains elusive. The first step is to accept yourself as you are, flaws and all. Understand where these flaws originate and how you can overcome them.

There are many tools available, and hypnotherapy is one of the most effective ones. Another important realization is that everyone’s life purpose is unique. Our life lessons differ, carried over from past lives. Spiritual regression is a powerful tool to uncover why you chose your current body and life script, the unfinished lessons you brought forward, and the blocks in your life. (Read more about Spiritual Regression)

Even challenging phases like Shani’s Sade Sati (Saturn’s seven-and-a-half-year period) come to teach us something. When we learn these lessons, we grow. Life is a school, and spiritual growth happens when we embrace our lessons.

Remember, no matter which spiritual path you choose—Bhakti (devotion), Jnana (Knowledge), or Yoga—the essence lies in transforming your habits, behaviour, and nature. Tools like meditation, Service (Sewa), and Self-study (स्वाध्याय) are there to support you, but the effort must come from within. Even if you’ve read numerous scriptures or performed rituals, the core task remains the same: to work on yourself.

The ultimate purpose of spirituality is not complexity but simplicity. The focus should not be on acquiring knowledge about the universe but on improving your nature, enhancing the lives of those around you, and finding true happiness within.

“कबीरा ते नर अंध है, गुरु को कहते और।” – Kabir

“Those people are blind who look elsewhere while seeking the Guru.” – Kabir

Spiritual Blindness is your inability to recognise the guru, ever present within. It is knowing the right path, but still not walking the talk. It is endless seeking, searching for some elusive kernels of wisdom, which will transform our life. But in the end, there is no true wisdom. Life just is. It flows. Using a choiceless awareness. We just have to manage this next step, this breath, this choice in front of us. Life demands us to be fully present. Make the choice we are being guided to. Not recognising it is turning a blind eye to the guru – ignorance.

Have you ever wondered what one quality the wise have in common?

It is not about knowing everything about everything under the sun. Finger on every breaking news or burning topic across the world. Not having an opinion on everything, a hefty monologue ready to give on every topic, a witty repartee of every question posed. It is not having read every book, there is. No sir! Intellectual prowess or erudition has nothing to do with what I am talking about.

It is, believe it or not, knowing how to love unconditionally. That, my friend, is the epitome of human evolution. Just as peace is. And ease is, and surrendering to divine will – within and without.

So here’s the challenge for all of you who want to grow: Learn to love unconditionally! There’s no other way around it.

Spirituality, An Escape Route? : Many people come to the spiritual path seeking escape from their ordinary lives or boost their self-esteem by looking for a surrogate community. But spirituality is not about running away; it’s about embracing life with greater awareness, transforming it, and finding joy in every moment. If we merely use spirituality as an escape, we lose its true essence. You can achieve spiritual growth in any profession or role you occupy—be it a banker, a teacher, or a homemaker—by performing your duties with sincerity, mindfulness, and dedication.

Take inspiration from the story of Shabari, who served selflessly in an ashram, sweeping and cleaning with devotion, as though she were preparing for God’s arrival. Over the years, her humility and dedication matured her spiritually to the point that Lord Rama himself came to meet her. This is the power of surrender, service, and selfless action.

Thus, spirituality is not about showcasing your divine nature or pretending to be peaceful and wise. True spirituality is silent, humble, and transformative. It involves working on yourself without seeking recognition. Meditate a little, serve selflessly, study spiritual texts, and surrender your actions to the divine. Slowly and steadily, you will notice profound changes within.

Rather than endlessly seeking external knowledge about the universe, dimensions, and life after death, ask yourself: Has my behavior changed? Have I improved the lives of those around me? Am I more peaceful and joyful? If not, then all your spiritual pursuits are in vain. Genuine spirituality must reflect in your relationships, your actions, and your state of mind.

This world is vast and endless, but the inner world is even more profound. As you explore it, you’ll naturally detach from external distractions and experience true spiritual awakening. Remember, divine guidance is always with you as long as you continue to work on yourself.

Finally, it’s crucial to understand that every spiritual journey begins and ends with self-transformation. Whether you follow the path of devotion, knowledge, or yoga, the fundamental work remains the same—improving your habits, behaviour, and mindset. Without this inner transformation, even the most advanced spiritual practices will not bear fruit.

As you walk this path, be patient and persistent. Cultivate discipline, practice humility, and remain grounded. Use tools like meditation, hypnotherapy, or shadow work to address your emotional blocks and unresolved issues. Gradually, as you work on your root chakra, solar plexus, heart chakra, and beyond, you will notice significant spiritual and personal growth. You’ll align more deeply with your spirit and intuition, discovering the purpose of your soul on this earth.

Emotional Resilience: The Soil of Spiritual Virtue

You cannot embody compassion when you’re reactive.

You cannot practice surrender if your nervous system is anxious.

You cannot hold space for others when your inner child is screaming for love.

That’s why at Inner Journeys, we begin with emotional integration as the core of all spiritual growth.

Our tools include:

Inner Child Healing – To reconnect with and reparent the wounded child within

Hypnotherapy – To access the subconscious mind and release limiting beliefs

Somatic Therapy – To release trauma held in the body and reconnect with inner safety

Parts Therapy – To resolve internal conflict and harmonize your inner world

“Spiritual practice cannot bypass the emotional body. It must include it.”

When we grow emotionally, our spiritual virtues take root in real, sustainable ways.

True spirituality is not difficult—it’s about making small, consistent efforts toward self-awareness and self-improvement. Without changing your behaviour, there can be no lasting transformation in your health, relationships, or spiritual growth. Spirituality begins with changing your nature, as even divine realisations will slip away without this foundation. Many embark on the spiritual path but fail to make real changes in their lives. If your intuition tells you that it’s time to leave a job, relationship, or place, listen to it. Life changes when you do! Holding on to fears, past trauma or attachment only hinders growth. It would be a spiritual treadmill, a lot of miles, but not reaching anywhere!

Energy must flow steadily upward organically, and inner work starts at the root chakra, addressing emotional blocks. Techniques like Inner Child Healing and Shadow work can help clear these blocks, making spiritual progress more natural. Understanding your spirit’s purpose will guide you toward meaningful change.

Start small: meditate a little, practice restraint, serve others, and maintain harmony with your family. Serve others, embrace simplicity, and allow yourself to grow naturally, step by step. As the saying goes, “Sehaj pake so meetha hoye! – Ripen slowly, and the sweetness will come on its own.” So, take one step at a time, and trust that the divine is always with you, guiding and supporting your journey.

True spirituality lies in consistent effort, acceptance, and transformation. Through these practices, you will experience profound peace, happiness, and a deeper connection with the divine. So keep progressing steadily, with simplicity and sincerity, and you will see spirituality naturally unfold in your life.

Be Authentic, and then you can Fly!

Every person is different, their story is different, their journey is different, their relationships that they have are different, and of course, their trauma related to it would be different. The only thing that is constant is that there is no bypass to spiritual growth. So if you think that being nice to people and ignoring what they said to you or did to you is going to help you become more spiritual or take you on the path of healing and take your journey forward, then that’s not going to happen.

Because every emotion that you suppress is creating some kind of issue emotionally and physically for you. Being spiritual doesn’t mean that you smile all the time and you let go of things or be superficial about it. Being spiritual actually means to be in connection or in sync with your spirit rather than, you know, doing all the facade. It means living in spirit.

So when you live in your spirit, then you live authentically, and you are true to yourself and to others. And for that, you need to heal yourself. You need to heal the traumas that you’ve been through. Before letting go of certain things, you need to heal them first. Letting go only happens when you get over something. And you can get over something by healing it.

Otherwise, you’ll just be creating a bridge on the river and walking over it. And one day, that bridge is going to collapse. You need to feel an emotion fully and heal it before you can actually let go.

The bridge is like a spiritual bypass that people take. And the bridge one day will collapse because the river is still flowing underneath. If you want to heal yourself, be you. Let go of everything, but in the process of letting go, heal yourself. When you heal yourself, you’re actually letting it go.

Because when you free yourself, then only you can rise high or fly. You know, with the baggage, you can’t fly.
