If you feel you are doing any favour by helping fellow beings then you are mistaken, my dear friend. We only help ourselves. Whatever we do comes back to ourselves. We are only sowing for ourselves. God is using us as instruments to help his other children. Don’t believe you have thus reserved a berth in heaven by shelling out two penny for the wealth God has bestowed on us. Material, Natural, Emotional and mental. As poet Hafez has said…”Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, ‘You owe me. ‘ Look what happens with a love like that. It lights the whole sky.’ Ever seen the Sun click our photographs while we bask in its glory?
And if you feel you can gain some social media mileage by posting photos of your philanthropic acts, then you are losing on two counts. Firstly as you brag you are losing any blessings coming your way. Not only that, by humiliating the hapless by clicking photographs of their misery, poverty porn, we are creating only bad karma for ourselves. So do yourself a favour, if you help anyone, don’t mention it to anyone. Better still keep it a secret, we have a long tradition of ‘Gupt Daan’ Secret Donation. An act of service is an interaction between you and God. The person is only offering you an opportunity. That is why often say..”No. Thank You!”
So, a gentle reminder that acts of service are not photo opportunities.
Life can change any moment. Would you be like to be photographed by those who are help you, while you are suffering and have your nose rubbed against the ‘big’ favour.
Traditional wisdom says, “Neki kar kooye mein daal’. Do a good deed, and then forget all about it, throw the memory in a well. Thereafter you can thank God, for giving you an opportunity to serve. That my dear is the real blessing, God thought you were worth of being His hands in the world. Hallelujah.
